The Future of Colour: How Waterless Dyeing Is Reshaping Indian Textiles

Every brightly coloured kurta, indigo jean, or printed dupatta tells a hidden story. For decades, that story has begun with water. Vast quantities of it.

Textile dyeing is responsible for roughly 20% of global industrial water pollution, and India sits at the centre of the problem. Despite possessing only 4% of the world's freshwater, the country remains one of the world's largest textile producers, consuming enormous volumes of water to pretreat, dye, print, and finish fabrics.

Nowhere is this more visible than Tirupur, Tamil Nadu.The city transformed itself into one of the world's knitwear capitals, exporting billions of dollars worth of garments each year. Yet its prosperity came at a cost. Untreated dye effluents polluted the Noyyal River, damaged farmland, and left communities downstream living with the consequences of industrial success. The story of Tirupur is not simply about pollution. It is about the limits of a model that treated water as inexhaustible.

The question facing Indian textiles today is therefore deceptively simple: can we create colour without consuming rivers?Surprisingly, the answer is increasingly yes.

The most promising breakthrough comes not from a new dye but from physics. Under high pressure, carbon dioxide enters a supercritical state, behaving like both a liquid and a gas. In this form, it carries dye deep into textile fibres without requiring water. Once the process is complete, the CO₂ is recovered and reused, leaving behind no wastewater, no toxic sludge, and no need for energy-intensive drying.

For years, this technology remained confined to expensive European systems. That changed when Mumbai-based Deven Supercriticals developed Suprano, India's first commercial-scale waterless dyeing technology capable of colouring cotton, polyester, viscose, silk, and blended fabrics using conventional dyes. Working alongside Arvind Limited and supported by H&M Group, the company has demonstrated that sustainable dyeing can also make commercial sense, reducing water, energy, and chemical consumption while lowering installation costs compared with imported alternatives.

Yet India's future will not be built on technology alone.

Long before industrial dye houses existed, Indian artisans coloured textiles with indigo, turmeric, madder root, and pomegranate rind. These natural dyes carry centuries of knowledge and continue to find renewed relevance as global demand for sustainable fashion grows. While natural dyes cannot replace industrial-scale production, they remain invaluable for artisan textiles, premium fashion, and export markets that increasingly value provenance as much as performance.

The future therefore lies not in choosing between tradition and innovation, but in combining them. Natural dyes will preserve India's craft heritage, while waterless technologies transform industrial manufacturing. Together they offer a more resilient path than either could alone.
